HMRC To Launch MTD Pilot On 22 April

Posted on April 19, 2024 by admin

HMRC is inviting tax agents to participate in the beta testing for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self-Assessment (MTD for ITSA), starting from 22 April. This gives agents two years to test the digital filing system with live client data before mandatory quarterly reporting for landlords and self-employed individuals with income over £25,000 begins in April 2026.

HMRC has not yet released specific eligibility criteria for clients to participate in the trial, but agents must have an agent services account (ASA). A live information session on 26 April will provide further details.

To join the testing, agents need compatible record-keeping software, and clients must authorise them digitally. From April 2026, individuals with income over £50,000 will be required to keep digital records and report quarterly to HMRC, with this extending to those earning over £30,000 by April 2027.
